Are Nonograms based on math?

No. Nonogram / Picross / Griddler / Hanjie shade cells from run-length clues to reveal a picture — counting and placement, not algebra. Visual observation puzzles (spot-the-difference, hidden object) use scanning only; they sit under Visual observation, not this list.

The picture is a side effect

You shade from the clues. A correct picture means the logic held. Nonograms.org is old, plain and deep if you do not want an account. Griddlers is a large community, including color — Griddler and Hanjie are other names. Picross rules are the same idea. Nonogram.com is more of a mobile game.

Color and size

Start mono and small. Color is a second logic (each color has its own run of clues). Leave 25×25 for a sitting, not a bus stop. Hanjie and Picross are the same idea under other names.
