Rules
- One ball is lighter or heavier (known or unknown); all others weigh the same.
- Each weighing yields only three outcomes: left heavy, right heavy, balanced.
- Locate the odd ball and (usually) its direction in the fewest weighings.
How to start
Think ternary
One weighing gives 3 outcomes; n weighings distinguish up to 3^n cases — size groups by that.
Split evenly into three
Make the three outcomes lead to equal-sized unsolved sets.
Track each ball's history
Left/right/off the scale each time lets you backtrack its possible weight.
Where players get stuck
- Splitting in two not three, wasting the "balanced" outcome.
- Finding the ball but not its direction when asked for both.
