Slitherlink — rules and where to play

SLITHERLINK · Fences / Loop the Loop / Number Loop / Sli-Link

Rules

  1. Draw lines between dots to form a single closed loop that never crosses or branches.
  2. A digit 0–3 tells you how many of that cell's four sides belong to the loop; blank means anything.
  3. The loop may not branch, and there is only ever one loop.

How to start

Open on the 0s and 3s

A 0 kills all four of its sides. A 3 leaves only one pattern. These two digits are the free opening of every grid.

Learn the 3-next-to-0 pattern

When a 3 touches a 0, the shared side is dead and the 3's other two sides are forced. This one pattern saves about half the work.

Watch dots that have run out of exits

Every dot on the loop has exactly two lines. Two drawn means the rest are dead; two dead means the rest are live.

Where players get stuck

  • Treating "one closed loop" as optional — branches accumulate and the grid can never close.
  • Grinding on fields of 1s and 2s while ignoring 0s and 3s elsewhere that already settled them.
