Pencil logic

Nonogram — rules and where to play

NONOGRAM · Griddlers / Picross / Hanjie / Paint by Numbers / Logic Art

Every row and column carries a short list of numbers telling you which runs of cells to fill. Finish, and a pixel picture appears — logic that paints as you solve.

Rules

  1. A clue like 3 1 means the row holds two runs of black cells, three long then one long.
  2. Runs need at least one blank between them, in the order shown, at an unknown position.
  3. Each cell is either black or confirmed empty. No guessing.
  4. You win when every cell is settled and no clue is contradicted.

How to start

Hunt for full rows first

When the digits plus their minimum gaps exactly equal the row width, the row has one solution. That is always the opening.

Then hunt for overlaps

Slide a long run all the way left and all the way right: the cells it covers both times must be black.

Mark blanks, not just blacks

Newcomers stall because they only track black. Empties are fuel too.

Switch rows when stuck

Nonograms almost never demand a grind. Two steps on a neighbour usually unlock the row you left.

Where players get stuck

  • Filling blacks and never marking blanks, so later you cannot tell where a run may still move.
  • In color nonograms, forgetting that different colors can touch with no gap between them.
